It’s that time of year again. The point when the summer semester is drawing to an end, the stress of exams is over and students up and down the land are packing up their stuff and heading home for the holidays – or even away on a gap year. So it’s time for part one of a special May series on Uni’s Year end. And for this one we’re looking at the road home…If you’re a student and you’re heading back home to Mum and Dad’s for the summer break, you’re probably dreading all the packing up – as well as wondering what fortune the summer might hold for you. But how will you be getting back? Will it be plane, train or automobile?
For many it will mean cramming everything into the boot space of an ageing hatchback and trying for several minutes to get the thing shut. Before finally driving off campus with the niggling worry that your ancient steed is likely to grind to a halt at some point between Uni and home.
If you don’t drive, it will mean waiting for Mum, Dad, Big sis, Big bruv, Uncle Tom Cobley or another family member you can rope in to appear with their estate car. Then you can fill all the lovely boot space – right up to the roof – with bedding, pillows and all the other bulky stuff you needed in your student digs. Don’t forget the obligatory Pastie stop at Motorway Services.
Others might be packing everything into a large backpack and shopping around online for the best price ticket on train or bus. It’s a cost-effective way of getting cross-country, but there’s only so much one can fit in a suitcase or backpack, and only so much room in train luggage racks and bus holds. The smart ones travel off peak – boarding a train out of London in rush hour without heavy baggage is never easy – add large suitcases and rucksacks into the mix and it becomes super-stressful.
International students will be catching the Heathrow, Gatwick or Stanstead Express to the airport for an intercontinental return – with the even greater challenge of packing several month’s worth of stuff into a large suitcase or two. We don’t envy them navigating the airport terminal with a fully laden baggage trolley, there’s definitely an art to driving one of those.
But if the thought of the long-lug home – from Birbeck, City, Goldsmiths, Kings, Brunel or Imperial Universities across the UK or further afield – makes you go weak at the knees, we have a beautifully simple solution.
A Storage locker at one of our stores – in Southwark, Camden or Wandsworth – is somewhere you can leave your stuff for the summer, then pick-up right where you left off when the new year commences in the Autumn. On top of that – if you’re staying for a minimum of 8 weeks (the holidays are longer than that) and pay up front, we’ll throw in two hours of free van Hire and 50% off – so you can get your stuff into storage quickly, simply and easily.
You can check availability and prices right now, online, or call our friendly team at your nearest store.
