London Through the Looking Glass: A Waltz Down Archway

London 2

North London’s Archway feels very urban; it’s very busy too. But, look closer and it has plenty to offer – it’s also one of the best connected areas in the city in terms of variety.

Dating back to the early 19th century, Archway has seen many changes over the years. Due to its solid Northern line connection to the city as well as greater North London, the area is now a bustling hive of activity.

Head one way, and you’ll end up in leafy Highgate Village, head another, and you’ll hit Holloway, closely followed by affluent Angel.

If you find yourself in Archway and you’re looking to get under it’s skin, check these places out…

Whittington Park

Just a stone’s throw away in Upper Holloway, Whittington Park has a real community feel. Come rain or shine, it’s a wonderful place to enjoy a stroll, and the cafe serves a mean cup of coffee. The park itself dates back to the 1800s, and when you walk through Whitty Park (as the locals call it), you get a real sense of old London.

Archway Market

London has more markets than you can shake a maraca at, but many don’t know about the virtues of Archway’s vibrant collection of stalls. It’s quirky, original, salt of the earth and is packed full of little treasures as well as fresh fruit and veg and truckloads of moreish pastries. It’s pretty special – so check it out.

Bread and Bean

If you’re looking for your second caffeine fix of the day, Bread and Bean is a must. The atmosphere is as welcoming as a warm hug, the coffee’s top notch, the daily soups supreme, and it boasts a host of Time Out awards. Not too shabby.

Searching for a beer and a boogie? Nambucca is one of North London’s best live music venues – and it serves up top notch gins, wines, guest ales and lagers. The boozer is always packed with noteworthy characters, and there’s little down that you’ll watch a band or artist that will have you humming well into the night.

Big Red

If you’re a real bar fly and you want to take it well into the early morn, walk on up the Holloway Road and soak in everything the Big Red has to offer. Part American style dive bar, part pool hall, and part premium rock venue, this is without a doubt the most epic way to end an adventure in Holloway. Awesome!
