Up at the top of Camden, just above the mighty Stables Market stands Chalk Farm.
Its name comes from the Anglo-Saxon Old English language for ‘cold cottages’. These days Chalk Farm is an urban melting pot that exudes charm, character and charisma. It is home to the famous Roundhouse and we like to think of it as Camden’s cool little sister.
If you’re out and about in Chalk Farm and you’re wondering what to do or where to go, let us give you a little guidance…
Okay, it’s called Camden Stables Market, but a great deal of it technically falls under the jurisdiction of Chalk Farm. Just a short swagger down the road from Chalk Farm tube station, this former horse stables and hospital is now home to the Proud Galleries, as well as some of the best alternative bars, cafes, food stands and clothing outlets in the Big Smoke. We could go on about it all day, but you should really go and check it out for yourself. We’re sure you’ll share our enthusiasm for the place when you’re there.
This joint is so cool it doesn’t even have an official website. No, it’s not because it’s nasty and will give you food poisoning, it’s well, just because. We can confirm you’ll get a warm welcome here and once you’ve taken a pew in the cafe’s cosy surroundings, you’ll be treated to a strong cup of coffee and a choice of well-cooked, non-greasy breakfast favourites. The perfect remedy to a morning of Stables Market shopping.
Now it’s time to get cultural. A short walk from the Chalk Farm Road, the Zabludowicz Collection is a little-known local wonder – and even if you’re not all that cultural, it’s a must visit. This thriving art space is quirky, eclectic and showcases the best alternative modern art in the UK, USA and Finland. No two visits are ever the same and upon stepping through the doors, you’ll be transported into another world, a world you’re likely to get lost in for hours. Well, that’s until you get hungry again…
Not only can you take part in a rum masterclass here, but if you’re looking for a feed packed with plenty of flavour and coupled with a Caribbean Kick, you’ve come to the right place. This restaurant and rum shack has been a firm London favourite for over 30 years, and with more Caribbean classics than you can shake a stick at, as well as some of the tastiest and most potent cocktails in town, you’re sure to have a fine time here.
This lively North London boozer is rocking seven nights of the week and upstairs, you’ll find a top selection of local bands treading the boards. Downstairs there’s unusual ciders, craft beers, spirits, wines, shots, dancing and DJs spinning the very best in alternative music plus commercial classics from the 50s right through to the modern day. If you want to round off your day out in Chalk Farm in true party style, you must have a few jars in here.
We hope you have a blinding time in Chalk Farm and if you’re looking to explore all areas of Camden Market while you’re in town, get yourself revved up and ready by reading our top Camden Market facts.
