As fun and fancy free as the summer holidays can be for the kids, there is also an enormous amount of downtime to fill over those six weeks.
Sometimes, this can leave the children feeling bored as well as agitated, resulting in you, the parent, wanting to pull your hair out.
But, never fear, if you live in, around or near Southwark, or you’re thinking of paying it a visit this summer, here are a few tips on things to do courtesy of ABC Selfstore…
The Tate Modern
Standing tall on London’s iconic South Bank, the Tate Modern is an amazing building that houses some of the world’s most striking and experimental art. Okay, kids aren’t going to want to stand around, musing over a painted toilet seat in the middle of an empty room, but luckily, there is a host of entertainment for juniors within in these four artsy fartsy walls.
The Tate runs a selection of summer holiday activities for kids and if you know where to look, there is plenty to keep the little ones entertained on every floor. Want to know more? Check out this kids’ Tate Modern guide.
Just a short riverside stroll down from the Tate you’ll find the legendary Shakespeare’s Globe – theatre, museum and all. To go or not to go, that is the question? Well, the answer’s not that difficult: you should certainly go, and you should take the children. As fun-filled as it is cultural, the globe offers tours specifically tailored for kids, engaging storytelling sessions, fun fact sheets and even the Globe Playground. Check out the Shakespeare’s Globe website, plan your visit and get ready to enjoy yourself.
Surrey Docks City Farm
Not only is Surrey Docks Farm free to enter, but once you have entered, you’ll find it hard to believe you’re in the big city. Most kids love interacting with animals and running around in the fresh air, so with a visit to the farm – you really can’t go wrong. This little haven on the banks of the River Thames is not only great for a wander, but there are bushcraft activities and family cooking sessions for the kids too – so don’t miss out.
Some might consider the park a bit of a cop out, but if you’re a parent, taking your kids to the park is a right of passage. If the weather is dry (let’s face it, that’s the best we can hope to get in the UK most of the time), a trip to the green pastures of Southwark Park will not disappoint. Boasting some cool walking trails, an adventure playground, a cafe, a playroom and even an art gallery, your little ones will be well and truly entertained all day long. Plus, they’ll be so shattered in the evening, getting them off to sleep shouldn’t be too much hassle – get that bottle of wine ready!
