What’s On: Things to Do in London During the Summer Holidays

The summer holidays are in full swing, and if you’re a parent, you might be feeling a little bit stressed by now…

As fun and freeing the old summer holidays are for the kids (six weeks without homework or the scorn of angry teachers!) – filling the time can prove a little tricky.

But, wait, London is one of the world’s most exciting cities and if you live in the capital, live near it, or you’re planning a visit, our quickfire ABC activity guide is sure to help…

Splash the day away in a London lido

Okay, the UK summer is often a little sketchy, but even if cloud covers the sky, it tends to stay quite warm – so why not stuff the kids’ swimwear in a bag (don’t forget your sunscreen – you know, just in case), cobble together a picnic and get yourself down to one of these bad boys…

Run free in a city park

As far back as anyone can remember, parents have been taking their kids to the park to fill the hours and wear them out for bedtime – and that tradition is still going strong. It’s just as well really, because London is more than 40 percent green (bet you didn’t know that); it’s also home to some of the world’s greatest parks. Here are some of our top picks…

Go wild at an urban zoo

Yes, believe it or not they do exist and you should pay one a visit – the kids will love you for it. There are several working urban farms in the confines of this fair city, and each provides a unique setting for the animal loving outdoor enthusiast. It’s amazing what you’ll find in these city farms and more often than not when you’re wandering around them, you’ll find it difficult to believe you’re in London…

  • Muchute Park and Farm: One of London’s largest farms, found in the Isle of Dogs.
  • Hackney City Farm: Formerly the site of a brewery, this east London farm is a must visit.
  • Hounslow Urban Farm: This community farm is spread over 29 acres, and it will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

Go to a West End show

Looking for a break from the excessive and unrelenting ranting of your children? A West End show will have them mesmerised for a couple of hours, leaving you to kick back and enjoy. The West End is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting parts of the city and with so many amazing matinees or early evening plays or musicals taking place every day of the week, grabbing a hot ticket or two is a must. Afterwards, you could even pay a visit to The Rainforest Cafe or M&M’s World.

Whatever you do over the summer, we hope you and the kids have an excellent time. Plus, if you’re looking more summer holidays tips, check out our guide to what’s on in Wandsworth, Southwark and Camden.
