How to Pack for the Big Home Move

moving, boxes, family, packing

As exciting as moving to a brand new home can be, the mere thought of packing up your life and shifting it elsewhere has the power to make even the most resolved person sweat buckets.

Let’s face it, packing up is about as fun as sitting on a rusty nail, but there is a way of making it more methodical and less painful. And lucky for you, we’re going to show you how – we are self storage experts, after all…

Just do it

We’re not trying to endorse Nike here; we’re simply saying that rather than sitting in the corner of your lounge, head in hands, wondering how you’re going to tackle your big house move, you need to roll those sleeves up and dive straight in. Otherwise, you’ll procrastinate and run out of time. And that will be bad.

Use an organisational app like Evernote or Google Calendar to map out a week by week plan, room by room, and allow yourself as much time before the move date as possible. That way, you’ll be able to deal with any snags or hiccups along the way.

Gather your packing supplies

Before you start packing up your undies and stowing away your kitchen hardware, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got all of your packing materials at the ready. To help, here’s a handy checklist…

  • Small boxes
  • Medium boxes
  • Large boxes
  • Heavy duty boxes
  • Wardrobe boxes
  • Packing tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Old newspapers
  • Stretch wrap for furniture
  • Marker
  • Labels
  • Hessian cloth, or similar
  • Bungee cords

Once you’ve made a plan and got all of your supplies, you’ll be ready for packing action.

Distribute weight evenly and cut corners if possible

When you’re packing up, and we assume you’ve already sussed that clearly labelling your boxes and packing categorically is the way to go, make sure you don’t load up boxes too much – they’ll only break, prove difficult to manoeuvre or crush your valuables (in more ways than one!). As a rule of thumb, make sure no packed box is heavier than two and a half stone.

Now, when we say cut corners, we don’t mean bodge job everything – that will only lead to disaster. What we do mean is, for instance, if you have a chest of drawers largely filled with PJs and delicates, and it’s not too heavy, wrap the drawers tight in cellophane or bungee cord them and move the whole unit. This will save you unpacking and packing again. The same can be done with cutlery holders, bedside tables or anything else you reckon you can get away with.

Get hacking with your packing

When you’re in the midst of a big home move, packing hacks are your friend. Here are a few quickfire hacks to lighten your load…

  • Use plastic wrap under lids to seal opened bottles.
  • Take photos of connected electronic devices before the move to know how to reconnect them at the other end.
  • Place styrofoam or durable paper plates in between breakable plates to keep them safe.
  • Tear out the pages in the Yellow Pages, or a similar phonebook, to wrap breakables. Everything’s online these days, anyway.
