London Through the Looking Glass: A Classic Day Out in Camberwell

Camberwell, southwark, butterfly

Standing proud as a peacock in the London Borough of Southwark, Camberwell is one of the city’s most sparkling gems. Why? Well, because Camberwell is oh so often overlooked but it’s awesome – and you should try it.

If you’re not sold, or you just don’t know where to start when it comes to Camberwell, don’t sweat it, because we’re going to tell you what to do and where to go (in the nicest way possible, of course). But, first, here are a few quick fire reasons why you should visit…

  • Camberwell boasts a host of eateries covering food from all over the world, all within walking distance of each other.
  • Camberwell has one of the finest selection of independent grocery stores south of the river.
  • Camberwell has both a carrot and a butterfly named after it.

Rat Records

Vinyl is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance – and we’re not just talking about the people who buy records to hang on their wall next to their Crossley for kudos – folks are actually listening to them again. That said, if you’re in Camberwell, you should pay a visit to Rat Records. This cosy but epic record store has been a local institution for 15 years, and if you’re looking for something rare, you’ll find it here. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s worth experiencing Rat Record’s electrifying atmosphere and soaking up its unrelenting passion for good music. A must see for sure.

South London Gallery

Yeah, it’s a gallery, and yeah, it’s in South London – and yeah, you should go. Open to a keen art appreciating London public for more than a century; the South London Gallery presents some of the world’s most cutting-edge and eclectic exhibits – and there’s a little something for everyone within these four walls. With a relaxing artisan cafe, educational displays, incredible artwork, a secret landscaped garden on offer, and more, no two visits here are ever the same. And if you’re in Camberwell, it’s worth heading over here for a gander – you won’t regret it.

Kazakh Kyrgyz

This may sound like a middle-eastern robot, but in reality, it’s a warm, welcoming and very reasonably priced eatery that serves up a hot slice Central Asian culinary genius. After flicking through endless stacks of records and having your mind blown at the gallery, a feast here is the perfect remedy. Choose from a seemingly endless selection of hearty, meaty (there are plenty of veggie options too) dishes and kick back as the staff serve you, entertain you, and make you smile. If you are eating here, we recommend trying the Plov; it’s delicious.

Hermit’s Cave

Besides sporting one of the best pub names, ever, this lively South London boozer enjoys the perfect balance of born and bred locals and Camberwell newcomers, all drinking in perfect harmony. The interiors are quirky yet comfy, there is an excellent selection of local ales as well as top wines and French ciders, and you’re likely to enjoy it here so much, you’ll probably end up eating, drinking and chatting until the bell rings. The perfect end to a perfect day in Camberwell.
