Now the summer (if you can call it that) has been and gone for another year; the big C is fast approaching. And when we say the big C, we mean Christmas.
If you are staring down the barrel of a big move and you’re hoping to sell up and get out before the festive season takes hold, chances are you have a colossal task ahead of you.
One of the biggest parts of any big home move is the decluttering of your stuff. Sometimes this is overwhelming (do you have sweaty palms?), but luckily, we’re here to offer you a few tips that will guide you through the process…
Sweep and clean
Now, this may sound a little counter productive when you’re talking about decluttering, but you’ll be surprised.
By going through each room, as well as the garden, and cleaning them all thoroughly, accompanied by sacks and bin bags, not only will you provide yourself with a neat, tidy canvas from which to work, but while you’re at it, you can ruthlessly throw away junk you really don’t need. Phase one done.
If you’re in the process of selling your home, you’re going to want to make it look practical, as well as presentable. So, go through every room with a fine tooth comb and look at every item that isn’t essential display-wise.
Mark all unessential as ‘sell’, ‘donate’, or ‘keep’ then carefully pack them into categorised boxes. Sell or donate as quickly as you can and stow away the remaining boxes away somewhere out of sight.
Look at the bigger picture
Your current furniture serves a purpose, so you won’t want to start dismantling it just yet. But, before you get to that stage, you should look at every piece of furniture in the house and decide whether, come judgement day, if you’re going to keep it or not.
Start a log of the items you’re going to keep and the ones you’re looking to sell. Coming up with a plan in advance will speed up the process once everything has been tied up and you’re ready to pack up and clear off. So, do it – today, or yesterday. Just do it.
Decluttering your life in a hurry, preferably before Christmas, can prove a little stressful, but by being methodical and starting as soon as you can – dedicating small but consistent amounts of time to the task – you will do it in no time.
