New Year’s Eve can be one heck of an annual do, or it can feel like the year’s biggest and most wallet draining anti-climax.
But, that said, if done the right way, NYE can be epic – especially when you’re in good old Southwark – it’s an awesome place for an evening out.
With so much choice, knowing where to go can seem like an impossible feat, but don’t stress, because we’ve done all of the legwork for you and created our very own ABC New Year in Southwark mini itinerary.
Without further ado, get your party hat on because here it comes…
Without a shadow of a doubt, Borough Market is one of the capital’s most desirable foodie hangouts – it’s also one of the most iconic markets in the world – so really, you should start your epic NYE here in the late afternoon or early evening.
Lining your stomach before a big old celebration is essential so wander through Borough’s many market stalls, soaking up the many vibrant smells and sounds as you go, before selecting your weapon of choice.
We suggest getting half a dozen oysters and a glass of bubbly from the Wright Brothers, followed by a big old sausage roll from the Ginger Pig – pure foodie heaven. If oysters and giant sausage rolls don’t float your boat, you can literally find any kind of cuisine here, it’s incredible too.
Quite possibly the best view in town, The View From The Shard certainly makes for a memorable New Year celebration, and the fact that it’s across the road from Borough Market makes it all the better.
Scale (or ride the elevator) The Shard’s dizzying heights and sip on your second glass of bubbly while soaking in panoramic views of London that are likely to stay with you for a lifetime – it’s also a chance to take a couple of cracking snaps for the NYE album.
Oh, don’t forget to book in advance – it’s a popular time of the year to visit after all.
Once you’re back on terra firma, zip back across the road to the Barrow Boy and Banker, a Fuller’s pub with oodles of atmosphere and a drinks menu that caters for everyone.
Grab some bar snacks, slug back a few drinks and get ramped up for a fun-filled night of celebrations with your relatives and buddies – if you can’t get a seat there are plenty of places to perch and lean and after a while, you’ll be so excited you’ll want to stand anyway.
Of course, if you’re in Southwark on New Year’s Eve, you can find a spot from which to marvel at the midnight firework display, which to be fair, is pretty amazing.
But, if you’re looking for something totally offbeat, just down the road in Waterloo there’s a do at The Vaults that will take you on a journey through space, ending up at The Party at The End of The Universe.
Working, and indeed drinking, your way through warp drives, underwater martian caves, martian canyons and more, you’ll celebrate the dawning in 2018 like no one else – you even get to have a chinwag with The Man on The Moon – not something you’ll forget in a hurry. A mind-blowing way to see in the New Year.
Whoever you are or whatever you choose to do, we hope you have the most special New Year’s yet. And if you’re embracing a new start in 2018 or before, and looking for self storage in Southwark, give us a tinkle – we’ll be happy to help.
